Frequently Asked Questions
1
Who is the Herts DBT Graduate Groups for?
The Herts DBT Graduate Group is for anyone in Hertfordshire who has completed a full DBT programme and would like ongoing opportunities to practise their skills, stay connected with others, and continue to build a life worth living! It can also be a chance to reconnect with members of your DBT group and continue that safe space.
2
Do I have to have completed DBT?
Yes. This group is designed for DBT graduates who already have a working knowledge of the skills and assumptions. It is not by any means intended as a replacement for a DBT programme.
3
Is this therapy?
No, the Graduate Circle is a peer-led skills community rather than a therapy service or formal DBT Programme. While members are encouraged to use and discuss DBT skills, the group does NOT provide individual therapy, crisis support or clinical treatment.
4
What happens during meetings?
The sessions follow the familiar S-DBT group, however we cover more skills in a session and there's less expectation on homework completion. An example of a session outline can be found on our home page, and include mindfulness practice, reviewing and applying DBT skills, discussing ereal-life challenges from a DBT perspective, celebrating successes, setting goals, and supporting one another in maintaining skillful behaviours.
5
How often do I have to come?
Your commitment level is entirely up to you - you can join all of the meetings, just a few as and when you need them, or even just the groupchat if you feel the skills group isn't for you!
You are more than welcome to join as many or as little as you want - however I would recommend regular DBT Groups, just to get to know people and to have a structured place to talk.
6
Is everything shared confidential?
Yes. Members are expected to respect each other's privacy and keep personal information shared within the group confidential.
There will be a safeguarding and confidentiality agreement you must sign when you initially sign up.

7
What if I'm struggling with Life Threatening Behaviours (LTBs) or in crisis?
The Graduate Circle is not a crisis service. If you are experiencing a mental health crisis or need urgent support, please contact your DBT team (if applicable), your GP, local crisis services, or emergency services if you're in immediate danger,
8
Do I need to speak during meetings?
Not at all. Participation is encouraged but never forced. You're welcome to listen, observe and contribute when you feel ready.
9
Is there a cost to join?
No! The DBT Graduate Circle is 100% volunteer based.
10
What should I bring to group?
If you have your DBT folder/handouts/manual, diary cards, or favourite skills resources, feel free to bring them along. A notebook can also be useful but nothing is required.
